BLACKSBURG – The nationally-ranked Virginia Tech swimming and diving programs will open up their Atlantic Coast Conference slate at home Friday and Saturday as they host Pittsburgh with Notre Dame. The event will be streamed live and free on HokiesXtra.
The two programs have gotten off to a fast start as they are a combined 10-1 on the season. The No. 22/29 Virginia Tech men’s program is 5-0 while the No. 27 women’s program is 5-1.
“We are looking forward to opening up our ACC slate with two fine schools in Notre Dame and Pittsburgh. This meet will conclude a three-year arrangement and we are excited about the opportunity to compete against such fine programs. There is a lot of buzz within our team knowing that we want to perform well in addition to the excitement of the swimming and diving world tuning into our live stream. It will be a busy and fun two days with a lot of swimming and diving being contested," said head coach Ned Skinner.
Last weekend, the teams swept Gardner-Webb and UMBC on Saturday and also knocked off Queens University (N.C.) and Richmond on Friday afternoon. For their performances in the meets, Collegeswimming.com named Lucas Bureau and Jessica Hespeler the ACC Men’s and Women’s Swimmer of the Week this past week.
During the two meets, Hespeler won the 400 relay, 1,000 free, 200 free and was a member of the 400 relay that won. Bureau won the 50 free, 100 free, 200 free relay, 200 fly and 400 free relay.
The men’s diving team qualified all four of their divers for the NCAA Zone Championships. The women’s team has had two divers hit their qualifying marks in both the 1-meter and 3-meter.
Last year, Notre Dame’s women’s team finished sixth at the 2015 ACC Championships while the men finished fifth. Pittsburgh’s men’s team finished 10th last season in the ACC while the women’s team finished ninth.
The meet on Friday begins at 5 p.m. and begins on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center.
