BLACKSBURG - Fiona Donnelly of the Virginia Tech swimming & diving program will compete for Scotland at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, which runs July 23-Aug. 3 in Glascow, Scotland. Donnelly earned a spot on the Scottish National Team after a strong performance at the Commonwealth Trials. There, Donnelly recorded her first individual national championship in the 100-meter butterfly, while also posting a lifetime-best time. Donnelly will be a key member of Scotland’s 400 medley relay event and will have an opportunity to swim the event individually.

“We are very proud of Fiona and for her opportunity to represent her country,” Tech head coach Ned Skinner said. “She is a great representative of our school and lives the life for our program.”

There will be 71 participating nations at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, which is an international, multi-sport event involving athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations. The event was first held in 1930 and has taken place every four years ever since (except 1942 and 1946, which were canceled due to World War II). After the Olympic Games and the Asian Games, the Commonwealth Games is considered the third largest multi-sport event in the world.

A native of Belper, England, Donnelly is a rising sophomore for Tech. She scored 53 individual points and 96 relay points for the H₂Okies at the ACC Championships across five events.

The swimming events will be held inside the The Tollcross International Swimming Centre, just outside Glasgow’s city centre and on the north bank of the River Clyde.
