BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech swimming and diving teams will head south for their final dual meet of the 2014 season this weekend, as the H2Okies travel to Wilmington, N.C. on Saturday, Jan. 25 for a matchup with UNC Wilmington.
The Tech men, currently ranked No. 13 in the country by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America, have started their spring season in outstanding fashion, racking up a 4-1 record since the start of 2014, a mark that includes a trio of victories over nationally-ranked foes.
After knocking off No. 7 Missouri two weeks ago in Knoxville, Tenn., the H2Okies turned in a strong performance last week in their home pool, downing No. 24 Harvard, 232.5-137.5, and beating No. 18 Virginia, 217-153. The win marked Tech’s first over its in-state rival since Nov. 14, 1981.
On the women’s side, the H2Okies have battled through a difficult schedule in the spring, dropping tough decisions to a trio of nationally-ranked foes before earning a dominating 263-98 win over Miami last weekend at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center.
In that contest, Kaylea Arnett was dominant in the diving events, fighting off a group of Hurricane divers to claim victories in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events. The junior won both events by at least 20 points.
UNCW will be competing in its home final on Saturday, fresh off a sweep of Wingate at home last weekend. The Seahawks have combined for just a single loss in 2014, as the men have beaten Wingate, Charleston and Catawba, while the women added a victory over North Florida, but dropped a 128-115 decision at Charleston.
Action will begin at Seahawk Natatorium at 11 a.m. on Saturday. After this weekend, the H2Okies’ third competitive weekend in a row, Tech will take a week off before hosting the Virginia Tech Invitational on Feb. 8-9.
That will be the H2Okies’ final competition prior to the Women’s Atlantic Coast Conference Championships on Feb. 19-22 and the Men’s ACC Championships on Feb. 26-Mar. 1. Both meets will be in Greensboro, N.C.
