CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The Virginia Tech swimming and diving teams earned a pair of non-conference wins in their first dual meet away from home, as both the men and women earned victories over Cincinnati on Saturday afternoon.

After both teams captured a pair of wins on Friday evening at Ohio State, the men downed the Bearcats 139-93, while the women took home a 148-92 victory.

“Our coaching staff felt great about our team’s energy today,” Head Coach Ned Skinner said. “We came back from a long day on Friday and made some good racing adjustments today.”

For the women, senior Katarina Filova earned a pair of medals on the day, taking first place in the 200 Freestyle (1:53.06) before finishing second in the 100 Freestyle (52.16).

Freshman Maggie Gruber also took home a pair of second-place finishes, taking the silver in the 200 Butterfly (2:06.10) and 200 Backstroke (2:03.23).

In all, the women ended the meet with 20 medals and six first-place finishes.

Sophomore Joe Bonk paced the men with a pair of gold medals, taking top honors in the 200 Freestyle (1:42.41) and the 50 Freestyle (20.56).

The H₂Okies also took the gold medal in the both the men’s and women’s 400 Medley Relay.

The men totaled 22 medals on the day, including eight golds.

“The divers paved the road for us today, and the swimmers followed with a strong performance of their own,” Skinner said. “We look to have a strong practice week as we gear up for Pittsburgh and Notre Dame next weekend.”

The H₂Okies will be back in action next week, when Tech travels north to face Atlantic Coast Conference newcomers, Pittsburgh and Notre Dame, in Pittsburgh on Saturday, November 9.
