H2Okies take two trips to the podium on the first day of the Men's ACC Championships
Tech wins silver and bronze medals in the first two events

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Virginia Tech swimming and diving program kicked off the first day of the 2013 ACC Men's Swimming and Diving Championships with a silver and bronze medal Wednesday evening at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. The H2Okies shattered school records in the 200 medley and 800 freestyle relays.

In the first event of the Championships, the quartet of Zach McGinnis, Nathan Hoisington, Gregory Mahon and Joe Bonk swam a time of 1:25.60 to win silver and automatically get a spot at the NCAA Championships with also setting a new school record.

Florida State took the event with a blistering time of 1:24.84 to set a new conference record.

The evening concluded with the 800 freestyle relay. Morgan Latimer, Owen Burns, Nick Tremols and Lucas Bureau battled for the fourth-ranked spot and took a NCAA B standard time of 6:26.80 to set a new school record.

NC State had the top time of 6:19.94, but got disqualified so the University of Virginia won the event with a time of 6:20.26 and the H2Okies claimed the bronze medal.

Excluding diving, leading the ACC after day one is the Florida State with 70 points. The Cavaliers are second with 68 points, while the H2Okies and North Carolina are tied for third with 66. Georgia Tech follows with 54 points and Boston College is sixth with 48. NC State and Duke round out the bottom with 30 and 24, respectively.

Competition will start back up tomorrow with the preliminaries starting at 11 a.m., followed by the finals at 7 p.m. The events tomorrow are the 500 freestyle, 200 IM, 50 freestyle and the 200 freestyle relay.
