GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Virginia Tech swimming and diving program kicked off the first day of the 2013 ACC Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships with a gold medal in the 200 medley relay Wednesday evening at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. The H₂Okies head into day two sitting in second place with 66 points.

In the first event of the Championships, the quartet of Sabrina Benson, Alyssa Bodin, Heather Savage and Katarina Filova touched the wall just .15 second before the University of Miami with a time of 1:38.30 to claim the 200 medley relay title. Not only was the time a school record, but it was a NCAA A standard time which qualifies all four H₂Okies to the NCAA Championships.

The last time Tech qualified a relay team was in 2010 when Filova was a member of the 800 freestyle relay.

The evening concluded with the 800 freestyle relay. The University of Virginia won the event, while the H₂Okie team of Rachel Sepanski, Katie Rogers, Emily Ryczek and Laura Simon placed sixth with a time of 7:21.50.

Leading the ACC after day one is the Virginia Cavaliers with a score of 70. Miami and NC State sit two points behind Tech tied for third place, while Georgia Tech and Duke are tied for fifth with 52 points. With 44 points is Boston College good for seventh and Florida State and North Carolina round the pack with 34 and 26 points, respectively.

Competition will start back up tomorrow with the preliminaries starting at 11 a.m., followed by the finals at 7 p.m. Men’s and women’s diving will begin tomorrow with the women’s 1-meter at 1 p.m.
