BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech swimming and diving program will head down to Raleigh, N.C., Wednesday afternoon as it takes on the NC State Wolfpack at 3 p.m. in the Willis R. Casey Aquatic Center. This is the first time since the beginning of November that both teams have faced a conference opponent.
LAST TIME OUT
• The Virginia Tech swimming and diving program kicked off the new year hosting Tennessee Saturday afternoon at the Christiansburg Aquatics Center. The No. 17 H2Okie men came out victorious as they took nine of the 16 events to defeat the Vols 166.5-133.5.
• Freshman Joe Bonk and the newly added Michal Szuba led the way as they each charted two individual wins. Bonk swept the freestyle sprints as he won the 50 and 100 freestyles. He also anchored the 200 medley relay team for the first win of the day to remain undefeated this season.
• In his first collegiate race as he just joined the team not even a month ago, Szuba won the distance freestyle events. The Poland native took the 1000 freestyle with a time of 9:11.88, 16 seconds faster than second place, and also took the 500 freestyle event.
• On the diving side, senior Logan Shinholser remained perfect as he swept both springboards to add to his eight-event winning streak. The senior has won 11 of the 14 events this season.
• The women fell to a No. 10 Tennessee squad, 108-186, senior Heather Savage led the women as she won the 100 butterfly and led the 400 freestyle relay team to a first-place finish. Blaire Kinsey was the other H2Okie to win an event against the Lady Vols, as she took the 200 IM.
SCOUTING THE WOLFPACK
• NC State enters Wednesday with a 5-2 dual record for the women and a 3-2 dual record for the men. The Wolfpack men have fell to Georgia and Southern California, while LSU and the Bulldogs defeated the women.
• NC State swept last week’s conference weekly honors, as sophomore Hannah Freyman and junior Barrett Miesfeld are the reigning ACC Swimmers of the Week (Jan. 9) for their performances against Savannah College of Art & Design and the University of Georgia.
• Last season, the Wolfpack finished in the top 10 at the 2012 ACC Swimming and Diving Championships. The women placed seventh, while the men took fifth place at ACCs.
