CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech swimming and diving program kicked off the new year hosting Tennessee Saturday afternoon at the Christiansburg Aquatics Center. The No. 17 H₂Okie men defeated the Vols, 166.5-133.5, while the Tech women fell to a No. 10 Tennessee squad, 108-186. The men took nine of the 16 events.

The men improved to 7-1 in dual meets, while this was just the third loss for the women who are 7-3.

Freshman Joe Bonk and the newly added Michal Szuba led the way for the men as they each charted two wins. Bonk swept the freestyle sprints as he won the 50 freestyle with a time of 20.58 and the 100 freestyle with a time of 44.97.

In his first collegiate race as he just joined the team not even a month ago, Szuba won the distance freestyle events. The Poland native took the 1000 freestyle with a time of 9:11.88, 16 seconds faster than second place, and the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:29.29.

On the diving side, senior Logan Shinholser remained perfect as he swept both events. He charted a score of 390.97 on the 3-meter and 372.82 in the 1-meter event.

Senior Heather Savage led the way for the women as she was the lone H₂Okie to win an individual race. She took the 100 butterfly with a time of 53.88. The Tech relay team of Savage, Katarina Filova, Emily Ryczek and Margaret Parcell closed the meet in fashion, swimming a time of 3:25.85 to win the 400 freestyle relay.

The H₂Okies will be back in action Wednesday, Jan. 16, as they travel to NC State for ACC action starting at 3 p.m.
