H2Okies set for tri-meet at Georgia Tech Saturday

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech swimming and diving program heads to Atlanta, Ga., to face the Georgia Tech with the Florida Gulf Coast women Saturday. Start time for 11 a.m. The H2Okies are 5-1 in dual meets for the men and 5-2 for the women.

SERIES

• This marks the 10th dual meeting against the Yellow Jackets and the H2Okie men and the eighth between the women

• The Tech women have never lost a dual meet against Georgia Tech with the series dating back to 2004

• The H2Okie men lead the series between the two teams 5-4, which dates back to 1999

• In Tech’s last regular-season meeting against Georgia Tech on Jan. 21, 2012, the H2Okies won 22 out of the 32 events and the men cruised past the Yellow Jackets, 196-104, and the women did the same, 172-127

• The last time Tech traveled to Atlanta was last season for the Yellow Jacket Invitational

• The H2Okie men swept the eight-team pool, while the women placed third

• Tech has never faced Florida Gulf Coast

SCOUTING THE YELLOW JACKETS

• The Yellow Jackets kicked off their 2012-13 season hosting College of Charleston on Oct. 13

• Georgia Tech swept the meet, with the men winning 187-99 and the women, 167-122

• Heading into Saturday, the Yellow Jackets are coming off both squads falling to Georgia

• Last week, Andrew Kosic was honored as the ACC Men’s Swimmer of the Week and Brandon Makinson collected his second Men’s Diver of the Week honor

• Kosic pulled off an impressive double victory in both the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle against the Bulldogs

• Makinson won both springboard events and broke his own school record on the 3-meter board in the dual meet against Georgia

• A year ago, Georgia Tech’s men placed sixth at ACCs, while the women notched eighth place

SCOUTING THE EAGLES

• The Eagles are coming off a 130-113 victory over ACC foe Miami three weeks ago and are 1-1 in dual meets this season

• Maegan Butler picked up CCSA Diver of the Week honors for the second straight week with her performance in the dual meet against Miami

• Butler took fourth in the 1-meter event and placed fifth on the 3-meter board

• Emma Svensson, who competed in the 2012 NCAA Championships, earned first-place finishes in both the 50 and 200 freestyles against the Hurricanes

• Jessie Porter and Eva Lehtonen also took home event titles in the 1000 and 200 freestyles, respectively

• The Eagles finished the 2011-12 season with their fourth-consecutive CCSA title

LAST TIME OUT

• The H2Okies are coming off a solid weekend in North Carolina last week

• Despite both teams falling to the Tar Heels Friday, Tech’s men swept the quad meet at Duke with wins over the Blue Devils, No. 15 Florida State and UNC Wilmington

• The women defeated Duke and the Seahawks but fell to the No. 25 Seminoles

• Senior Heather Savage dominated this past weekend and led the H2Okie women with a total of 60 points in the two meets

• She won every individual event she competed in, including the 100 backstroke, 50 freestyle, 100 butterfly and 200 butterfly

• Tech’s divers swept the ACC weekly honors this week with Logan Shinholser being named the ACC’s Male Diver of the Week and Kaylea Arnett honored for the women

• Shinholser swept the springboard events at Duke and won the 1-meter against North Carolina and he posted NCAA qualifying standards in all four events he competed in this past weekend

• Arnett led the H2Okie women throughout the weekend, as she swept the 3-meter events and notched NCAA qualifying standards in three of the four events
