Kaylea Arnett earns All-American honors in the platform

AUBURN, Ala. – Freshman Kaylea Arnett of the Virginia Tech diving team closed out the 2012 NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships, as she placed sixth in the in the platform event to be named an All-American Saturday night at the James Martin Aquatics Center on the campus of Auburn University.

After placing eighth in the preliminaries with a score of 284.40, Arnett, the ACC Champion of the 1-meter event brought in a score of 285.00 to place sixth and bring in 13 points for the H2Okies.

Freshman Kelli Stockton received Honorable Mention All-American honors as she placed 11th overall for Tech. The freshman brought in a score of 275.00 in the prelims, before scoring a 280.40 in the finals to tally six points for the H2Okies.

Also competing for Tech was senior Erika Hajnal, as she finished 21st overall for Tech in the 1650 freestyle. She completed her career as an H2Okie with a time of 16.22.21. Freshman Sabrina Benson placed 47th overall in the 200 backstroke, as she touched the wall at the 1:59.21 mark.

Closing out the meet for Tech was junior Heather Savage. The All-American in the 100 butterfly finished the 200 fly with a 23rd placing with a school record time of 1:57.29.

As a team, the H2Okies brought in a score of 52 points to finish 18th overall, eight points behind No. 17 Virginia. Cal Berkeley took the gold with a total of 412.5 points, while Georgia took home the silver with 366. Southern California took third with 325.5 and Stanford placed fourth with 318 points. Arizona rounded out the top five with 299 points.

Gregory Mahon, Zach McGinnis, Logan Shinholser and Ryan Hawkins will close out the H2Okie season next weekend, starting March 22 in Federal Way, Washington. Click the link for all of the Championship information: http://www.ncaa.com/championships/swimming-men/d1
