H2Okies hang on to fifth place on day 2

ATLANTA, Ga. – After the first full day of competition, the Virginia Tech men hang onto their fifth-place spot with 148.5 points. Virginia took over sole possession of first place, with 280 points, followed by Florida State (199.5) and North Carolina (196). Clemson sits just ahead of the H2Okies in fourth with 154 points.

Blake Trabuchi-Downey started the H2Okies off with a 12th-place finish in the 500 freestyle, swimming a “B” cut time of 4:26.66, followed closely by Alex Lutterbein in 15th with a 4:28.52. Virginia swept the race, with Matt McLean claiming the gold with an “A” cut time of 4:13.53.

Greg Mahon then picked up 15 big points for Tech in the 200 IM, finishing fourth with a time of 1:46.34. Nick Tremols earned a 13th-place finish in 1:49.06, also a “B” cut. North Carolina’s Tyler Harris earned gold in 1:44.99.

Rich Ulatowski represented the H2Okies in the final individual race of the night, swimming a 20.16 in the 50 free to tie for 11th. Clemson’s Eric Bruck earned the gold in 19.56.

In the final race of the night, the 200 freestyle relay, the H2Okies earned a sixth-place finish in 1:19.16. Karl Botha started off for the squad, followed by Stephen Hawkins, Greg Mahon and Rich Ulatowski. Duke earned its first swimming gold medal, winning the relay in 1:18.52.

The competition continues tomorrow, with preliminaries at 11 a.m. and finals beginning at 7 p.m.
