GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech junior Erika Hajnal was named ACC Performer of the Week this afternoon after a tremendous performance this past week in two difficult tri-meets. This marks the second time in her career that Hajnal has received this honor, after being the first swimmer to win it last season on Oct. 27. She is the first Tech swimmer to earn the honor this season. Additionally, she became the second H2Okie this season to be named Virginia Tech Athlete of the Week, following Heather Savage’s award two weeks ago. Hajnal was VT Athlete of the Week twice last season, after her performances in the ACC and NCAA Championships.
Hajnal picked up three gold medals and two silvers in the six races she swam this weekend. Hajnal opened the weekend on Friday night, finishing second and breaking Louisville's pool records in the 500 (4:49.86) and the 1000 freestyle (9:57.81) events against No. 14 Indiana and No. 16 Louisville. She then closed out the weekend by winning all three events she swam on Saturday against Cincinnati and Kentucky, placing first in the 500 (4:58.28) and 1000 free (10:18.79) and the 200 butterfly (2:03.76).
The H2Okies will conclude the regular season this weekend as they host the first annual Virginia Tech Invitational at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center. The meet will feature five teams from Virginia and the surrounding states on Feb. 5-6. It will be the final chance for Tech’s swimmers and divers to qualify for the postseason.
