LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Virginia Tech swimming and diving team headed to the Midwest this evening to take on the nationally ranked Cardinals of Louisville along with the even higher ranked Indiana Hoosiers. The No. 18/16 Cardinals and No. 13/14 Hoosiers were too much for the H2Okies, as Tech ended up 0-4 on the night. Indiana went undefeated in the meet, while the Cardinals finished 2-2. The Virginia Tech men are now 3-2, while the women are 4-3.
Despite the tough field of competition, sophomore Logan Shinholser won both events he participated in, earning a 334.10 in the 1-meter springboard event and a 385.40 on the 3-meter. Matt Baumler earned the only swimming title for Tech, leading a H2Okie sweep of the 100 fly with a time of 49.12.
In addition to their three titles, the Tech men earned four second-place finishes; Zach McGinnis in the 100 back, Matt Baumler in the 100 free and the 200 fly, and Adam Skipper, Stephen Hawkins, Ryne Francis and Gregory Mahon in the 200 free relay. Additionally, Blake Trabuchi-Down claimed a bronze medal in the 1000 free.
The Lady H2Okies earned three second-place finishes and four third-place finishes. Erika Hajnal finished second in both the 500 and the 1000 free, while Lauren Ritter came in third in the 1000 and in fourth in the 500. Heather Savage then earned a silver medal in the 100 fly. Keri Sink and Katarina Filova earned the final two individual medals, coming in third in the 100 breast and 50 free, respectively. Steffi Drechsel, Kaleigh Gomes, Addie Carne and Filova then finished off the night with a third-place finish in the 200 free relay.
The H2Okies are back in action tomorrow morning to compete in their final head-to-head meet of the season. Tech will take on Cincinnati and Kentucky, with the diving competition starting at 10:30 a.m., followed by the swim portion at 1 p.m. There will be no live results for the tri-meet.
