H2Okies close season at NCAAs

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Charlie Higgins broke his own school record in the preliminary round of the 200 backstroke to highlight the Virginia Tech H2Okies on the final day of competition at the NCAA Men’s Swimming & Diving Championships on Sunday.

Higgins, after competing in the 100 back yesterday, posted a season-best and personal-best time of 1:43.72 in the 200 backstroke event, bettering his school-record mark of 1:43.85, which he set in 2009.

Mikey McDonald and Logan Shinholser closed out the diving events with respective 24th- and 25th-place finishes in the platform event. McDonald finished with a score of 267.60, while Shinholsers’ final score was 245.05.

Higgins took 25th in the 100 back on Saturday, while Shinholser and McDonald finished 25th and 26th, respectively, in the three-meter. McDonald also finished 18th, and Shinholser 33rd, in the one-meter event on Friday.

The H2Okies didn’t send anyone to any final rounds of competition throughout the meet.

Tech finished 8-3 on the regular season and concluded with a 2-3 record in ACC competition, earning a fourth-place finish at the ACC Championships. They finished the season ranked 23rd, their highest ranking of the season.
