PISCATAWAY, N.J. – After earning a qualifying spot for the NCAA’s yesterday in the three-meter event with a second-place finish, Mikey McDonald came back to win the one-meter event on Saturday at the Zone A Diving Championships at the Rutgers Aquatic Center.
McDonald took first with a final score of 693.20, accounting for both the preliminary and final scores added together. Daniel Martin took sixth-overall with a score of 588.25, while Logan Shinholser finished 10th with a score of 580.55. The men earned three of the top-10 spots among 41 competitors.
Cara Murnan led the women in the three-meter event, placing fifth-overall with a score of 554.50. The H2Okies placed four in the final 15 spots among 45 competitors, as Sarah Milton finished eighth, Sara Mokhtari took 11th and Carissa Santora finished 14th.
“We represented Virginia Tech very strongly today,” said head diving coach Ron Piemonte. “We did a really nice job in having seven finalists on both sides combined. Though we didn’t get any new NCAA qualifiers today, we’re looking forward to a solid day in the platform events tomorrow.”
On Sunday, the men and women will finish off the Zone A Diving Championships as both compete in the platform event, with action beginning at noon. Results can be found at www.divemeets.com and www.hokiesports.com.
