McDonald earns one of four NCAA qualifying spots on day one
Mikey McDonald placed second-overall in the three-meter event.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Senior Mikey McDonald ensured a spot in the NCAA’s for the third time of his career on Friday, as he finished second in the men’s three-meter event in the Zone A Diving Championships at the Rutgers Aquatic Center. The men competed in the three-meter event, while the women battled in the one-meter event.

McDonald took second overall with 358.35 points in the finals and clinched one of the four total spots available for NCAA’s among all 41 men competing.

“To have Mikey qualify on the first day really takes the pressure off the rest of the meet for him,” said Tech’s head diving coach Ron Piemonte. “To earn one of the four spots among that competition is great and we are really pleased with it.”

Daniel Martin also finished among the top-10 for the men, placing seventh overall with a score of 321.90. Carissa Santora paced the women in the one-meter with a 15th-place finish and 224.10 points.

“Daniel also looked impressive for us today,” Piemonte said. “Our women struggled a bit today, but we have some good windows of opportunity available for tomorrow and Sunday’s competitions.”

On Saturday, the men and women will switch events, as the men will compete in the one-meter and the women will compete in the three-meter. Both the men and women will then close out with the platform events on Sunday. Action will begin at noon. Results can be found at www.divemeets.com and www.hokiesports.com.
