CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – A small portion of the Virginia Tech swimming teams competed at the Triangle College Cup in Chapel Hill, N.C., last weekend to close out their regular season. They joined other conference teams Clemson, NC State, Duke, Georgia Tech and North Carolina for a final meet of preparation before the ACC Championships.
Becky Flora earned first-place finishes in the 200 and 500 freestyle events, with respective times of 1:50.84 and 4:52.25, while Katie Steeves won the 400 IM in 4:24.68, recording the fifth-best finish this season for the Lady H2Okies.
Freshman Alex Lutterbein also had a great meet for the men, taking the title in the 400 IM in 3:54.06, setting a season-best time for the men. In doing so, he became the first individual men's athlete to earn a NCAA "B" qualifying bid for the H2Okies. His older brother, senior Griffin Lutterbein took third in 4:05.83, marking an individual-best finish for the season. The elder Lutterbein also took second in the 1650. Michael Hallock set a season-best time for the men in the 200 freestyle, taking the bronze in 1:40.31. Hallock also took second in the men’s 100 back.
Sarah Ameen earned a pair of runner-up finishes in the 100 and 200 backstroke events in 55.94 and 2:01.89, respectively, setting the quickest time of the season in the 100 back. Lauren Haley took the crown in the 200 back in 2:00.47, setting a season-best finish for the women this season. Senior Andrew Rogers added a trio of second-place finishes in the 50 and 100 freestyle events as well as the 100 butterfly. His respective finishes of 20.86 and 45.03 in the freestyle events mark the best finishes for the men this season.
Mason Wilcox added a third-place finish in the 100 fly, while Adam Skipper finished second in the 200 IM and third in the 100 breaststroke. Paige Ayres added three top-five finishes in the 100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke and 200 IM, including a season-best finish of 1:04.87 in the 100 breaststroke. Katie Priess added two top-five finishes in both breaststroke events, including a top time of 2:18.69 in the 200 breaststroke. Sarah Ault took second in the 100 freestyle and third in the 50 freestyle, and Alexandra Tomasky closed the day with a runner-up finish in the 1650 freestyle. Trevor Carr added two fourth-place finishes in the 50 and 100 freestyles in 21.04 and 45.67, respectively.
The women will compete in the ACC Championships on Feb. 17-20, while the men are slated to compete Feb. 24-27.
