Hokies travel to Atlanta for ACC Softball Championship

Tech is seeded 10th and will face the No. 7 seed Duke on Wednesday

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech returns to the ACC Softball Championship on Wednesday after a one-year absence as the No. 10 seed Hokies get set to face No. 7 Duke at 3:30 p.m. at Mewborn Field on the campus of Georgia Tech.

The game will be broadcast on regional sports networks and on the WatchESPN platform. The voice of Virginia Tech softball Evan Hughes will also be on the call in Atlanta with an audio stream available on HokieSports.com.

The Hokies (22-29, 7-16 ACC) closed out the regular season with an 11-0 win over Hampton on May 2 at Tech Softball Park. Tech set a new program record with 35 total bases in the victory and every available player for head coach Scot Thomas saw the field.

Tech clinched the 10 seed after Florida State, the top team in the field, swept NC State last weekend in Raleigh. The Hokies and Blue Devils (29-26, 13-11 ACC) met for the first time on the softball diamond last month where Duke took two out of the three games in the inaugural series at Tech Softball Park. In the series opener, the Hokies used a three-run fifth inning on RBI doubles from Caroline Schoenewald and Taylor Clark to take the 3-1 win. Carrie Eberle allowed no earned runs and two hits in a complete game effort.

The winner of Wednesday’s game will take on the No. 2 seed Pitt at 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 10. The Panthers (31-17-1, 16-6 ACC) took both games in a doubleheader against the Hokies on March 23 at Tech Softball park before the final game of the series was snowed out.

TECH TIDBITS: ACC Championship
• Head coach Scot Thomas is 18-12 all-time in the ACC Championship.
• Since their first season in the league in 2005, the Hokies have reached the finals four times and have won two ACC titles.
• Tech has reached the semifinals in eight of its 12 trips to the ACC Tournament.
• The Hokies’ two ACC titles are tied for the third most in league history with NC State.
• The Hokies’ four straight wins en route to their first title in 2007 is also tied with NC State for the most consecutive victories in ACC Tournament history.
• Assistant coach Angela Tincher still holds the ACC Championship record with 62 strikeouts in the 2005 tournament as a freshman.
• Megan Evans, a 2017 Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame inductee, holds the tournament record with nine walks in 2005.
