Late rally not enough for the Hokies in loss to Louisville
Schoenewald goes 3-for-4 with three RBI and Eberle tosses 4.1 innings of scoreless relief

BLACKSBURG – Junior Caroline Schoenewald went 3-for-4 with three RBI and freshman Carrie Eberle allowed only two hits and no runs in 4.1 innings of relief work but the Virginia Tech softball team fell behind early and couldn’t come back as Louisville (25-13, 9-4 ACC) got by the Hokies (16-27, 5-16 ACC) on Saturday at Tech Softball Park.
Schoenewald’s three hit and three RBI day both matched career-highs while Eberle 13 of the 15 batters she faced that kept the Cardinals off the scoreboard after the third inning. Senior Vanessa Gonzalez, junior Breanna Davenport, sophomore Emma Strouth and sophomore Lauren Duff each tallied multi-hit games.
Trailing 10-3 entering the bottom of the fifth, the Hokies went on to score five unanswered runs that made it a two-run game. With runners on the corners and one out in the home half of the fifth, junior Jessie Mehr laid down a beautiful bunt on a suicide squeeze that scored Gonzalez from third and allowed her to reach first.
The squeeze provided the jolt the Hokies needed as Schoenewald later rocketed a two-run double down the right field line that made 10-6 in favor of the Cardinals. Sophomore Olivia Lattin then drew a bases loaded walk that made it a three-run game, 10-7.
After Eberle stranded two in top of the sixth, Schoenewald delivered again on a two-out RBI single that scored Duff all the way from second and cut the deficit to two, 10-8. Eberle worked a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the seventh but the Hokies were unable to extend the game in the bottom half.
Strouth got the Hokies on the board in the bottom of the first on a one-out RBI double down the left field line that plated Gonzalez from second base. After a wild pitch that allowed junior Breanna Davenport to score, Duff rocketed a two-out RBI single to center field that made it a four-run game, 7-3.
The Hokies will next travel to Liberty for a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. on April 18.
