First inning home runs lift Tech to 5-2 win over Longwood
Eberle strikes out five in a complete game effort

BLACKSBURG – Junior Aysha Richardson went 2-for-2 with a two-run home run and freshman Carrie Eberle struck out five in a complete game effort as the Virginia Tech softball team defeated Longwood, 5-2, at Tech Softball Park on Tuesday evening.
Sophomore Lauren Duff also added a two-run round tripper for the Hokies (16-24, 5-13 ACC) while junior Caroline Schoenewald went 1-for-3 with an RBI single. The win snapped a six-game losing streak for Tech and three-consecutive losses to the Lancers (15-21).
After Eberle fanned two batters in a 1-2-3 first inning, sophomore Olivia Lattin led off the home half with a walk. The next batter was Richardson who sent a 1-1 pitch well over the wall in centerfield to put the Hokies ahead 2-0.
Strouth followed the home run with a one out single to left center before Duff wrapped 1-0 pitch around the left field foul pole for her fifth home run of the season. The two jacks pushed Tech’s team home run total to 46, which ranks among the top six in the nation.
Eberle tossed a scoreless second but the Lancers got on the board in the top of the third. An RBI single plated made it 4-1 but sophomore Emma Strouth prevented a second run from scoring by delivering a beautiful throw home. Freshman Taylor Clark at third and Duff helped complete the putout for the second out of the inning.
Longwood cut their deficit to two on an RBI single in the sixth, 4-2, but Tech responded with an RBI single through the left side from Schoenewald that scored Eberle from second.
With the score at 5-2 in the seventh and a runner on first, Eberle’s fifth K of the night ended the ballgame and sealed her seventh win of the season.
This weekend, the Hokies will face Louisville at Tech Softball Park for a three-game series beginning on Friday at 6 p.m.
