Hokies drop Saturday doubleheader at Pitt

PITTSBURGH - Junior Breanna Davenport went 4-for-6 with two doubles over two games but it wasn’t enough as the Virginia Tech softball team fell to Pitt in a Saturday doubleheader. The Panthers (20-16, 3-11 ACC) defeated the Hokies (15-23, 5-12 ACC) 11-5 in game and 9-1 in game two.

Sophomore Emma Strouth had a three RBI day to give herself 28 on the season to lead the team while classmate Olivia Lattin and Davenport each posted their 10th doubles of the season in the twin bill.

GAME ONE

With one out and the bases loaded in the top of the second, Lattin laced an RBI single to left that scored junior Jessie Mehr from third and tied the game up at 1-1. Davenport then came to the plate with two outs and hit a grounder that was bobbled by the second baseman, allowing her to reach first and freshman CarrieEberle to score from third.

Strouth followed Davenport with a two RBI single off the right field wall that extended the Hokie lead to 4-1. Sophomore Lauren Duff kept the two-out rally going with another single that plated Davenport and made it 5-1 Tech.

Despite the early lead, the Hokies couldn’t hang on as the Pitt offense exploded to score 10 runs and take the first game, 11-5.

GAME TWO

Trailing 2-0 entering the top of the third, Lattin led off with a double and then moved to third on a one out double off the bat of Davenport. Strouth made it a one run game, 2-1, as she scored Lattin and registered her team best 28th RBI of the season.

Despite battling back, the Panthers used a four-run third and a three-run fourth to put the run rule in effect and complete the doubleheader sweep.

Tech will look to salvage the final game of the series tomorrow at 12 p.m. as the Hokies and Panthers square off on WatchESPN via ACC Network EXTRA.
