Hokies sweep doubleheader with ETSU
Davenport goes 3-for-5 with three runs scored and four RBI in the twin bill

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech softball team took both games of their midweek doubleheader with East Tennessee State on Tuesday night as the Hokies took game one, 4-2, and the night cap, 9-7.
The Hokies (13-13, 3-6 ACC) have now won three in a row ahead of a big three-game series in South Bend against Notre Dame this weekend.
Junior Breanna Davenport went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and four RBI for Tech over the two games. Freshman Carrie Eberle (6-3) allowed only five hits and struck out six in a complete game effort in game one. Classmate Taylor Barnes improved to 3-3 on the season after going seven innings in the second game
GAME ONE
In the bottom of the second, Davenport sent her sixth home run of the season over the centerfield fence to put Tech on the board first, 1-0. She’s now hit a home run in three of her last four games. With one out, Eberle walked and sophomore Lauren Duff doubled before freshman Hannah Jones sent them both home on a bases clearing double to extend the Tech lead to 3-0.
After allowing two runs in the top of the third, Eberle settled down and blanked the Bucs in fourth and fifth innings. With one out in the home half of the fifth, senior Aysha Richardson hit a stand up triple to the right center field gap, her second of the season. Sophomore Olivia Lattin later delivered with an RBI double down the left field line that scored Richardson and made it 4-2
The two-run lead was all Eberle needed as she recorded a 1-2-3 inning in the sixth and retired the side in the seventh to register her sixth win of the season.
GAME TWO
Tech trailed 2-0 early but quickly took the lead thanks to a four-run third inning. Senior Vanessa Gonzalez delivered with the big hit, a two RBI single up the middle, that also saw Lattin come home from third after an errant throw by the catcher. An infield RBI single from Davenport that scored Gonzalez made it 4-2 Hokies.
Duff extended the lead in the bottom of the fifth with two outs and Davenport on second. Duff took a 3-2 pitch and sent it over the left centerfield fence for her fourth home run of the season.
The Bucs got to with 6-3 but Tech staved them off again after a double from Davenport and a single from sophomore Emma Strouth drove in three runs that made it 9-3.
ETSU made things interesting in the top of seventh where they pushed across four runs but a key lineout double play set the stage for a groundout to second, giving the Hokies the sweep.
The Hokies return to action on Friday at 6 p.m. against the Fighting Irish for the first game of a three-game set.
