Hokies pound Tar Heels in five innings, 13-4
Tech hands UNC their first ACC loss of the season with a run-rule victory

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech softball team used 10-run second inning, its most runs in an inning since 2014, to take the final game of a three-game set with North Carolina as the Hokies (11-13, 3-6 ACC) toppled the Tar Heels (24-6, 5-1) in five innings, 13-4, on Sunday at Tech Softball Park.
Freshman Carrie Eberle (5-3) went all five innings to earn the win in the circle and tallied her first career hit and RBI on a single to right field in the fourth. Junior Breanna Davenport went 2-for-3 with a three-run home run and sophomore Emma Strouth went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBI. The offensive outburst helped Tech to their first home win of 2017 and hand the Heels their first conference loss of the season. Tech's 10-run second inning was its most runs in a frame since scoring 12 runs in the first inning against Morgan State on March 20, 2014.
Trailing 2-0 entering the bottom of the second, Davenport reached on an error to lead off the inning. Back-to-back doubles from Strouth and junior Jessie Mehr tied the score at 2-2 and sophomore Caitlyn Nolan’s two RBI double down the right field line put the Hokies ahead, 4-2.
With the bases loaded and still no one out in the inning, an RBI groundout from sophomore Olivia Lattin and and an RBI single off the bat of senior Vanessa Gonzalez extended the lead to 6-2. The Tech advantage ballooned to 9-2 on Davenport’s fifth home run the season, her fourth in the last five games. A sac fly from sophomore Lauren Duff capped off the big inning and made it 10-2 in favor of the Hokies.
Tech still led 10-4 entering the home half of the fourth but their offense wasn’t done yet. A two-run home run off the bat of Strouth to center field and Eberle’s RBI single made the final score 13-4 as Eberle recorded a 1-2-3 top of the fifth.
