Hokies can't get past No. 1 Florida State, 5-2

Richardson goes 2-for-4 and throws three scoreless innings of relief

BLACKSBURG – Junior Aysha Richardson allowed no runs in 3.0 innings of relief and went 2-for-4 at the plate but her efforts weren’t enough as the Virginia Tech softball team dropped the final game of its three-game series with No. 1 Florida State, 5-2, on Saturday.

Redshirt sophomore Chelsea Whitcomb picked up and RBI double and sophomore Olivia Lattin notched two base hits for the Hokies (10-11, 2-4 ACC). The Seminoles (22-1-1, 6-0 ACC) did all their damage in the first three innings of the game before Whitcomb pitched a scoreless fourth and Richardson blanked the ACC’s top offense in the final three frames.

FSU pushed across three runs in the first on a dropped infield fly, a hit batter with the bases loaded and a bases loaded walk.

They carried a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the second when, with sophomore Lauren Duff on second, Whitcomb sent a 2-1 pitch to shallow center field for her fourth double of the season. Duff scored all the way from second to put the Hokies on the board, 4-1.

The Seminoles responded with a run in the top half of the third that made it 5-1 but Tech cut its deficit to three again, 5-2, on RBI fielder’s choice from sophomore Emma Strouth that scored Richardson from third.

Despite Richardson keeping the Seminole bats at bay in the last three frames, the Tech bats were kept quiet by reigning ACC Pitcher of the Year Jessica Burroughs, who picked up her second save of the season.

The Hokies will be back in action this Wednesday with a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. at Western Carolina.
