GREENVILLE, N.C. - Despite a 3-for-3 two home run day from sophomore Lauren Duff and a strong relief appearance from junior Aysha Richardson, the Virginia Tech softball team dropped its final game of the Pirate Invitational to Seton Hall, 6-5, on Sunday morning.
Richardson tossed three scoreless innings of relief with four strikeouts for the Hokies (8-5) who also saw multi-hit games from sophomores Olivia Lattin, Emma Strouth and Caitlyn Nolan. Lattin’s solo home run in the fifth was the third home run of the game and it marked Tech’s third three home run game of the weekend. It was Hokies’ third one-run loss of the season
With Richardson on second in the bottom of the third and the Hokies trailing 5-0, Strouth knocked a two out base hit to center field that cut the deficit to four, 5-1.
Nolan picked up her second base hit of the ball game on a single up the middle with one out in the bottom of the fourth. Duff then stepped to the plate and posted her first home run of the season on an 0-1 pitch to left field that made it 6-3.
Richardson moved from center field to the pitcher’s circle to start the fifth and picked up two strikeouts in the inning. Lattin led off the home half of the fifth with her second home run of the season down the left field line that cut the Pirates lead to two, 6-4. The Hokies used the long ball against the bottom of the sixth with Duff’s second round tripper of the day that made it 6-5 in favor of Seton Hall.
The Hokies had two base runners on in the seventh but it wasn’t enough as the early 5-0 hold proved to be costly.
Tech will face Radford in a midweek game on Wednesday at 3 p.m. before travelling to Charlottesville to open ACC play with Virginia from March 3-5.
