GREENVILLE, N.C. - The Virginia Tech softball team went 1-1 on day two of the Pirate Invitational on Saturday with a 10-1 run rule victory over Coppin State and a narrow 2-1 defeat to host East Carolina in the night cap.

The Hokies (8-4) saw strong starting pitching in both games from sophomore Olivia Lattin and freshman Carrie Eberle. Sophomore Caitlyn Nolan went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI over the two games.

East Carolina 2, Hokies 1

Despite a strong start from Eberle where she allowed only one earned run in a complete game effort, the Hokies fell to East Carolina, 2-1.

Trailing 2-0 entering the bottom of the seventh, sophomore Emma Strouth led off the inning a double to the right center field gap. She then moved to third on a fly out and scored on a sacrifice fly from Nolan making it a one-run ball game, 2-1.

With sophomore Lauren Duff on first and two outs, Tech couldn’t muster another run to force extras. It was the Hokies’ second one-run loss of the season.

Before the final frame, Tech’s best scoring opportunity of the day came in the fourth inning when junior Aysha Richardson reached on a fielding error and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Lattin. Despite the four and five hitters coming up, Tech couldn’t score Richardson from second.

Hokies 10, Coppin State 0 (5)

Lattin went 2-for-3 and tossed a complete game with three strikeouts in the Hokies’ 10-0 run-rule victory in five innings over Coppin State in the first game on Saturday.

Richardson and Nolan hit solo home runs, both their first of the season. Nolan also had an RBI double as part of her 2-for-2 day.

With one out in the top of the first, Richardson gave the Hokies a 1-0 lead with one swing of the bat as she sent a 2-1 pitch over the left field fence. After Tech pushed two more runs across on a throwing error and a wild pitch, Davenport knocked an RBI double to the gap that drove Strouth in and gave the Hokies a 4-0 lead.

Nolan extended the lead on her third career home run in the second and then made it 6-0 on an RBI double in the fourth. In the same inning, RBI singles from Lattin, Strouth and senior Vanessa Gonzalez and a sacrifice fly from junior Jessie Mehr made it a 10-0 ballgame.

The Hokies next take on Seton Hall at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday in its final game of the Pirate Invitational.
