LAS VEGAS - Redshirt sophomore Chelsea Whitcomb struck out six batters in four innings and freshman Taylor Barnes picked up two Ks in three innings of relief work as the Virginia Tech softball team defeated Southern Utah, 7-1, on Sunday morning at the Sportco Kick Off Classic.
The Hokies (2-1) took advantage of four Thunderbird errors to plate seven runs. Sophomore Lauren Duff went 2-for-3 with two runs scored to lead the way offensively. Whitcomb was one strikeout shy of matching her career-high of seven Ks set last season against Morehead State.
Tech set the tone right away with a four-run bottom of the first inning. Whitcomb led off the frame on a double, moved to second after tagging up on a fly out, and scored all the way from second after junior Breanna Davenport rocketed a ball that was booted by the second baseman.
Davenport scored on the very next play when a single through the left side off the bat of Duff turned into another Southern Utah error, this time on the left fielder, that let the ball roll all the way to the wall. With Duff on third and senior Vanessa Gonzalez at first, Gonzalez took off for second but the catcher attempted to pick the runner off at third. Duff took off for home and successfully avoided the tag, giving Tech a 3-0 lead. An error on the shortstop with two outs scored Gonzalez on the next play that made it 4-0 Hokies.
Tech tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the third on RBI singles from sophomore Emma Strouth and junior Aysha Richardson. Barnes later came on for Whitcomb in the top of the fifth and surrendered only two hits over the final three innings.
Tech will be back in action later tonight for their final game of the weekend against CSU Bakersfield at 6:45 p.m. EST.
