BLACKSBURG – Senior pitcher Maggie Tyler and freshman catcher Lauren Duff have been named to the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) University Division All-State Softball Team, the organization announced.
Duff was tabbed to the second team and was named the organization’s Rookie of the Year. Tyler wrapped up a decorated career at Tech with a first team honor, her second-career appearance on the VaSID All-State team.
Virginia Tech has now seen two or more players on the VaSID All-State team in five-consecutive seasons while Duff becomes Tech’s first Rookie of the Year since Lauren Gaskill received the honor in 2012.
Duff’s VaSID honors caps off a stellar campaign for the freshman from Chesapeake, Va., where she was also named ACC Freshman of the Year and an NFCA All-Region selection. Her OPS of 1.047 led the Hokies and her 13 runners caught stealing ranked second in the ACC.
Tyler went 23-18 for the Hokies in 2016 and she ranked in the top seven in the ACC in multiple categories including ERA (seventh, 2.52), opponent’s batting average (seventh, .238) and starts (t-third, 33). She also led the conference with 245 strikeouts and finished second with 242.0 innings pitched.
