JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - The Hokies regular season finale came down to the final inning when Tech ended the game’s scoring drought with two runs, holding East Tennessee State scoreless despite five hits to earn the 2-0 win.
With their 10th shutout of the season, the Hokies sport a 29-27 record, while the Buccaneers fall to 18-19.
As the game was looking to head in to extras, cleanup hitter Lauren Duff stepped up the plate to lead off the seventh. Without any hits on the board, Duff launched her fifth home run of the season to give the Hokies a 1-0 lead.
Pinch hitter Vanessa Gonzalez drew a walk before Caitlyn Nolan advanced the pair on a fielder’s choice with only one out on the board. After the Hokies pulled off a double steal to advance to second and third, Vanessa Gonzalez singled up the middle to drive in the assurance run before the frame ended.
Maggie Tyler tossed her 26th complete game with 10 strikeouts, marking the seventh time this season the ace has thrown out double-digit batters. The senior improves to 23-17 to conclude the regular season.
In an attempt to take an early lead, after Katey Smith drew a leadoff walk in the fourth, Kinsey Johnson took her place as a pinch runner at first. Johnson easily stole second to put the Hokies in scoring position. At the plate, Duff reached first on a pass ball before advancing on a Buccaneers’ error. However, Johnson got stuck in a wild rundown along the third base line before being tagged out by the first baseman.
The Buccaneers outhit the Hokies in the non-conference matchup, 5-2 A single by Taylor Carter and a walk in the fourth gave ETSU a chance to score but Tyler caught the next batter swinging to end the frame.
Following Tech’s pair of runs, ETSU’s Jenninne Duncan led off the bottom of the seventh with a double down the left line. However, Tyler showed her prowess with strikeout number 10 to end the game.
Today’s game concluded the regular season for the Hokies before ACC tournament play at NC State May 12-14.
