BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech softball team slugged seven home runs against Virginia on Saturday, clinching the Senior Day sweep at Tech Softball Park.
Kelsey Mericka’s grand slam highlighted the Hokies’ five home runs the game one shutout to tie a program record from 2015. Tech added two more homers in the second game, taking a 10-1 lead by the end of the second. All but three of the Hokies’ 25 runs in the doubleheader were scored on a home run, including all 15 in game one.
Maggie Tyler tossed two wins to improve to 22-17 on the season with her 10th shout of the season.
With the 750th win for head coach Scot Thomas, the Hokies hold a 28-27 mark in 2016, 13-11 in conference while the Cavaliers fall to 18-33, 7-13 in ACC play.
The Hokies attacked from the start on a Lauren Duff three-run home run to right field, scoring Olivia Lattin and Katey Smith.
Tech continued in the second inning with two more bombs by Chelsea Whitcomb and Mericka. Whitcomb drove in two before Mericka cleared the bases with a rocket to right-center for the grand slam.
Breanna Davenport lengthened the Hokies’ lead on a three-run homer in the third. Seniors Kiara Ota and Smith singled and doubled, respectively before Duff topped off the inning with her second three-RBI hit of the day to tie a program record.
Virginia threatened in the fifth with runners on the corners following a Emily Osherow single but UVA could not convert.
The Cavaliers’ held the Hokies’ scoreless for the remaining two innings but the damage was done. Tyler took the win in 3.0 innings with Mikaela Aiken tossing the final 2.0 innings in relief.
The Hokies picked up right were they left off, tacking on two more home runs in game two.
Despite UVA taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, Smith’s sacrifice fly to right field evened the score. Mericka’s 5-for-6 day continued as she drove in three more runs on her second homer of the day. The Hokies put two more runs on the board before the Cavaliers ended the frame.
UVA was able to cut Tech’s 10-1 lead nearly in half by the third, scoring four runs on four hits. The rivals were held scoreless for the next three innings until UVA’s Danni Ingraham notched a two-run homer, narrowing the margin to three runs.
However, Tyler struck out her third batter of the day before the Cavaliers’ McKall Miller flew out to left field to end the game.
Tyler clinched her second win of the day while UVA’s Lacy Smith look the loss.
The Hokies wrap up the regular season at East Tennessee State on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
