ELON, N.C. - Leadoff hitter Breanna Davenport steadied the Hokies to their 5-3 victory at Elon on Wednesday, driving in Tech’s go-ahead run in the fifth while scoring two throughout the non-conference matchup.

The Hokies never trailed throughout the hard-fought contest. Vanessa Gonalez logged her second multi-hit outing in as many games, propelling Tech to a 25-27 overall mark while Elon fell to 25-22.

Davenport got the ball rolling for the Hokies, sending a blooper just over the shortstop for a leadoff single before stealing second. A walk and a Phoenix error advanced her to third before Emma Strouth drew an RBI-walk for the 1-0 advantage.

Elon put a run on the board in the bottom of the second, mirroring Tech with Kara Shutt’s lead off single. A sacrifice hit followed by an Emily Cameron single plated a Phoenix run to knot the score at 1-1.

Elon continued to threaten in the third on Shutt’s leadoff double and Hannah Olson’s single to put runners in scoring position. However, the Hokies ended the frame on a pair of groundouts to keep the home team scoreless.

Tech took a 3-1 lead on a pair of hits in the fifth inning. Davenport led off the inning, reaching on an Elon misplay and later scored on a wild pitch. Pinch runner Kinsey Johnson followed suit and came home on Lauren Duff’s laser through the left side. The Phoenix ended the frame with two Hokies on base but not before Jessie Mehr logged a single of her own.

Elon responded in the fifth two runs to even up the score at 3-all on Hannah Olson’s double and Emily Roper’s single. However, ace Maggie Tyler struck out the next batter to end the threat.

The Hokies sealed the win in the sixth plating the final two runs on four hits. Gonzalez and Chelsea Whitcomb notched back-to-back single, putting Tech in scoring position with no outs. Davenport logged her second hit of the day, driving in Gonzalez for the game winning run. Katey Smith sent a frozen rope to left field allowing Whitcomb to cross the plate for the assurance run before a double play ended the frame.

The Phoenix showed their fight in the remaining two innings but could not plate a run, finalizing the score at 5-3.

Tyler tossed her 19th win of the season of 23 complete games, improving her ERA to 2.56. Elon’s Abby Barker took the loss.

The Hokies return home this weekend to host Virginia for their final series of the 2016 season. Saturday’s doubleheader begins at noon followed by a single game Sunday at 1 p.m. Sunday’s contest is both senior day and military appreciation day.
