TALAHASSEE, Fla. - The Virginia Tech softball team dropped a pair of games to No. 7 Florida State on Saturday at JoAnne Graf Field.

Despite holding the Seminoles to a mere four runs in the doubleheader, the Hokies slide to 24-26 overall, 10-10 in ACC play while the Seminoles improve to 37-5, 15-1 in conference.

Lauren Duff highlighted Tech’s offense during the twin bill, notching a double in game one and a home run in the second. However, the Hokies were unable to convert on their five hits to earn a win.

The Hokies showed promise from the start drawing back-to-back walks however, the Seminoles fell into a grove with pitcher Jessica Burroughs giving up two walks for the remainder of the game.

The Seminoles struck first as Jessica Warren’s groundout scored leadoff hitter Morgan Klaevemann to take a 1-0 advantage that would prove permanent through the fifth inning.

The Hokies showed their fight as Lauren Duff doubled to center in the fourth inning, only a few feet shy of a home run. However, the Seminoles escaped with another clean inning on strikeout and popup.

Tech’s best shot to score came in the sixth as Davenport led off the frame with her second walk of the day before Olivia Lattin followed up with a single. Florida State intentionally walked Duff to load the bases to force an out at every plate. The decision worked in favor of the Seminoles, holding the Hokies scoreless.

Florida State’s Zoe Casas drove in the final run of the game, scoring Ellie Cooper to clinch the 2-0 decision. Burrough’s tossed nine strikeouts in the premier game to secure the win while Maggie Tyler took the loss in her 22nd complete game of the season.

The second contest mirrored the first as Florida State took a 1-0 lead off an Alex Powers’ RBI-single.

The Hokies and Seminoles battled through three scoreless innings until Florida State hit back-to-back home runs by Carli Harrod and Carsyon Gordon, upping the score to 3-0.

Tech rallied in the seventh as Lauren Duff sent a solo-shot to center field, putting the Hokies on the board. Kelsey Mericka followed suit with a single to right field. However, Florida State proved their No. 8 ranking, ending the game on a double play to secure the 3-1 ballgame.

Mikaela Aiken started in the circle for the Hokies, taking the loss in game two with one earned run in 3.0 innings. Chelsea Whitcomb gave up a second earned run in the remaining 3.0 innings, collecting the no decision.

The Hokies return to JoAnne Graf Field on Sunday at noon for the final game of the series against the Seminoles.
