BLACKSBURG – After a one-run victory to begin the day, the Virginia Tech softball team pummeled Western Carolina with four home-runs, securing the win in six innings to close out Tuesday’s matchup at Tech Softball Park.
Despite a slow start in the premiere game, the Hokies’ bats exploded in game two with a pair of solo shots by Olivia Lattin, a three-RBI bomb from Emma Strouth, and a two-run walk off by Caroline Schoenewald. Lauren Duff and Strouth also slugged one- and two-run doubles.
Caitlyn Nolan’s 2-for-2 outing with one RBI highlighted game one before scoring two runs in the second.
With her 17th win of the season, Maggie Tyler set a new single-season high, tossing 11 strikeouts in the complete-game shutout. In game two, Chelsea Whitcomb threw her third win of 2016 in 4.0 innings of work with a pair of strikeouts.
The Hokies exploded in game two, taking a five-run lead by the end of the first. Duff got the ball rolling with an RBI-double to left-center before Strouth sent a three-run homer to the same spot. Schoenewald continued the Hokies success with an RBI-single before the frame came to an end.
The Catamounts responded with a home run of their own. Crystal Cyr singled before Victoria Mariscal sent a homer just over the left field fence to narrow the score to 5-2.
However, Tech struck back as Strouth doubled to left-center, driving in two runs to total five RBI – tying the Hokies single game high in 2016.
Lattin slugged the first of her two home runs in the third down the left line, upping the score to 8-2. Western Carolina’s Cyr added one of her own in the top of the fourth to maintain the five-run margin. But Lattin’s momentum continued, leading off the fifth with her second bomb of the game – tying a program record of homeruns in a single game set by Kelsey Mericka at Pitt in 2015.
Tech showed its prowess in the six as eight-hole hitter Schoenewald rocketed her third career home run in walk-off fashion, driving in two runs to end the game in six, 11-3.
In game two, Lattin, Schoenewald, and Strouth had multi-hit and RBI at the plate. Both Lattin and Schoenewald had a pair of hits with two and three RBI respectively while Strouth went 3-for-4 with a career high of five RBI.
Leading off game one, Tyler struck out a trio of batters to surpass her 200th of the season by the end of the first frame.
Western Carolina threatened in the top of the fourth after advancing to third on a Tech error, but Strouth ended the inning with a caught fly ball.
Nolan tapped an RBI-single in the fourth to score Lattin, giving the Hokies a one-run lead by the end of the fourth.
The Catamounts strung together a pair of singles in the sixth, putting runners on the corners but Tyler closed out the inning with her eighth strikeout of the day.
Again, Western Carolina led off with a single in the sixth but Tyler shut the Catamounts down the same way she started. Her 11 strikeout of the game ensure the 1-0 victory.
The Hokies face a quick turnaround, traveling to Radford on Wednesday for a single game at 7 p.m. at Radford Softball Stadium.
