BLACKSBURG – Despite a two-RBI home run by Breanna Davenport in the seventh, the Virginia Tech softball team fell short to No. 19/20 Notre Dame on Sunday afternoon in a fan-filled Tech Softball Park.
Senior Maggie Tyler struck out six in her 19th complete game of the season, tying a career high set in 2014. With Tyler’s third strikeout of the day, she now ranks third in Tech softball history with 654 strikeouts, surpassing Katie Maynard (2003-06).
Davenport’s one-out, two-run home gave the Hokies momentum in the seventh. However, Tech dropped a 5-3 decision to Notre Dame, sliding to 21-24 overall, 10-7 in conference play while the Irish improve to 32-6, 9-3 ACC.
Notre Dame jumped on the board in the second on trio of singles that allowed Morgan Reed to score off Baily Bigler’s bat.
The Irish added a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth each to lengthen the margin to five runs. Caitlyn Brooks registered the RBI-single in the fifth for the second run of the frame. A set of four consecutive singles drove in both Megan Sorlie and Bigler in the sixth.
The Hokies responded in the sixth with back-to-back singles by Caitlyn Nolan and Emma Strouth before Kelsey Mericka flew out to center, allowing Nolan to score.
Chelsea Whitcomb notched a leadoff single to continue Tech’s momentum in the seventh. On the third pitch of her at-bat, Davenport sent a rocket to the TSP parking lot, scoring two to cut the deficit to a mere two runs. Lauren Duff recorded her second single off the day followed by Nolan drawing the walk from Irish relief pitcher Katie Beriot. However, the Hokies could not drive in the runners, coming up short in the series finale.
Tyler took the loss with a 16-15 mark on the season while Notre Dame's Allie Rhodes earned her 14th win in 6.0 innings of work.
In addition to Davenport’s two-RBI homer, freshmen Duff and Strouth led Tech’s offense going with two and three hits, respectively.
The Hokies return to Tech Softball Park on Tuesday for a 5 p.m. doubleheader against Western Carolina.
