BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech softball team came up short in Saturday afternoon’s doubleheader versus No. 19/20 Notre Dame at Tech Softball Park.
Despite Emma Strouth’s two-run homer in the bottom of the third in game two, the Hokies could not get the win over the Irish. Maggie Tyler tossed 13.0 innings, taking both losses on Saturday. The Hokies slide to 21-23 overall, 10-6 in ACC while the Irish improve to 31-6, 8-3 in conference play.
Tech and Notre Dame held each other scoreless through 6.0 innings, with one and two hits apiece, respectively. Olivia Lattin singled in the first while Notre Dame posted a single in each of the first two frames. However, neither team could covert to put runs on the board.
In the seventh inning, Notre Dame strung together a trio of singles to take a 3-0 lead before grounding out to end the inning.
Tech could not put a run up in the bottom of the frame, finalizing the score at 3-0. Tyler tossed her 18th complete game of the season with two strikeouts and a single earned run.
The Hokies showed their fight in game two, holding a one-run lead through five innings.
Notre Dame jumped on the board first, capitalizing on a leadoff walk before Melissa Rochford’s sacrifice fly scored the runner. However, Tech responded in the bottom of the frame on a trio of singles by Caitlyn Nolan, Strouth, and Chelsea Whitcomb, driving in one run apiece.
The Irish put up two runs of their own in the second to even up the score at 3-3.
Lauren Duff drew a walk to lead off the third before Strouth rocketed her second homer of the season beyond the left-center fence, giving the Hokies a 5-3 advantage.
However, the Irish fought back in the sixth with driving in the tying and go-ahead runs followed by an assurance run off a solo shot by Rochford in the seventh, finalizing the score at 7-5.
Strouth hit a perfect 2-for-2 with three RBI while Nolan and Whitcomb each tacked on a hit and RBI in game two.
Tech and Notre Dame wrap up the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Tech Softball Park.
