BLACKSBURG – After opening the day with a shutout victory, the Virginia Tech softball day wrapped up the doubleheader with a walk-off homerun in the bottom of the seventh to take both games from Mercer on Saturday afternoon at Tech Softball Park. The Hokies improve to 17-16 while the Bears fall to 17-22.
Lauren Duff collected three hits between the pair of games, extending her streak to 14 games – the fourth-longest streak in program history. Katey Smith led the Hokies offense, driving in three runs on three key hits on Saturday.
Tech jumped on the board early game one and held on throughout the game to earn the 6-0 shutout. Maggie Tyler collected seven strikeouts in her sixth complete-game shutout of the season.
The Hokies opened the game with two runs in the first inning as both Smith and Duff sent RBI-doubles to centerfield for the 2-0 advantage.
Tech tacked on three more in the second led by Emma Strouth’s first collegiate triple that brought home two. Olivia Lattin drove in the final run, upping the lead to 5-0.
Breanna Davenport finalized the score at 6-0 with her fourth homerun of the season to clinch the Hokies first win of the day.
The Bears put a runner in scoring position in the fifth, but the Hokies’ perfect fielding kept Mercer from coming home. Lattin’s unassisted double play highlighted Tech’s defense in game one.
Mercer came to fight in game two, leading off the game with four consecutive singles to take the early 1-0 lead. Tech held the bases loaded through three batters to escape with only Meghan Rud’s run on the board.
The Hokies responded with two runs in the first to take their first lead of the game. Tech pulled off the double-steal, advancing Nolan to second and Lattin home to tie it up. Smith topped off the inning with a double down the left line for the Hokies to take the lead.
However, Mercer answered back in the third with three straight hits, including a triple by Quirisa Mauga and single by Natalie Shiver to earn a one-run advantage. The Bears extended their lead when Shiver sent a second RBI-single to center, upping the score to 4-2.
Tech revealed its prowess in the remaining two innings as Smith narrowed the deficit to one with single in the sixth. Kelsey Mericka led off the seventh with a double to right-center, putting the Hokies in scoring position. On the fifth pitch, Chelsea Whitcomb slugged a two-RBI homer to center field for the walk-off win, clinching the 5-4 victory.
Mikaela Aiken earned the start, tossing 4.1 innings with one strikeout. Tyler closed out the game for the remaining 2.2 innings, taking the win.
The Hokies return to Tech Softball Park on Sunday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader against the Hampton Pirates.
