BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech softball team took game one of Wednesday’s doubleheader against Liberty before coming up short in the second at Tech Softball Park. The Hokies sit at 15-16 overall while the Flames hold a 16-16 mark.

Freshman Lauren Duff led the Hokies’ offense with two singles and a triple between the pair of games, extending her hitting streak to 12 consecutive games. It is the longest streak among current Hokies, surpassing Breanna Davenport’s 10 game streak from 2015.

Maggie Tyler dominated in the circle, tossing nine strikeouts with a lone run in her 12th complete game of the season to improve her record to 12-9.

Liberty struck first with a double down the right line followed up by an RBI-single from Alexia Taylor. However, Mickey Loveridge’s run would be the only for the Flames throughout the remainder of the game.

Tech responded with six runs in the fourth inning and two in the second to earn the 8-1 win. Caitlyn Nolan led off the inning with the first of the Hokies five hits to come. Duff tapped a single to the middle before Kelsey Mericka sent a 2-RBI double to left. Vanessa Gonzalez singled to drive in the third run. The Hokies batted around in the fourth allowing Nolan to bring home the final two runs on a double to right-center.

Tech’s momentum continued in the fifth as Duff sent a leadoff single up the middle before Emma Strouth slugged her first collegiate homerun to left field, finalizing the score at eight.

The Hokies and Flames played through four shutout innings before a runner came home in game two.

Mirroring the first game, Liberty took the lead when Kassidy McCoy sent a sacrifice fly to right that allowed Tori Zavodny to score.

Tech rallied in the sixth inning as Duff slugged her second triple of the season before a Liberty error allowed her to score and tie up the game.

However, the Flames led off the seventh with a double by Taylor before Zavodny tapped the RBI-single to clinch the 2-1 decision.

Liberty’s Stephanie Marlowe picked up the win while Mikaela Aiken took the loss.

Nolan, Duff, Mericka, and Aiken each collected three assists in game two as the Hokies’ ended the night with perfect fielding.

Tech hosts a pair of doubleheaders this weekend, beginning with Mercer on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Hokies end the weekend against Hampton on Sunday at 1 p.m.
