ATLANTA - The Virginia Tech softball team took the first game of the day at Georgia Tech before coming up short in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Mewborn Field. The Hokies sit at 14-15 overall, 9-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference while the Yellow Jackets hold a 2-7 conference mark, 13-19 overall.

Maggie Tyler and Mikaela Aiken threw 20.0 scoreless innings, only giving up one run throughout the three-game series against the Yellow Jackets.

Mirroring the series opener on Friday night, the Hokies allowed a single hit while taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning. However, Virginia Tech capitalized in the fourth inning to earn the 5-0 win.

A Georgia Tech error followed by Lauren Duff single put Virginia Tech in scoring position. Kinsey Johnson reached first on a hit-by-pitch, loading the bases as Vanessa Gonzalez stepped into the box. Gonzalez drew the RBI-walk to bring Kelsey Mericka home before a double play ended the inning.

The Hokies momentum continued into the fourth inning, adding four runs to the board. Duff sent another single up the middle before a hit-by-pitch and walk juice the bags. Olivia Lattin slugged a two-RBI double to left center, followed up by another two-RBI hit by Caitlyn Nolan. Virginia Tech had two on the bases before Georgia Tech’s Jenna Goodrich tossed her sixth strikeout of the game.

The Hokies’ infield collected 12 assists, led by Whitcomb with five at third and Nolan with four at shortstop.

Tyler threw her second gem of the weekend in the 5-0 victory. The senior tossed nine strikeouts with a single hit that came late in the sixth inning. Tyler improves to 11-8 after her 10th complete game and fifth shutout win.

Breanna Davenport led the Hokies in the final game of the series, going 2-for-3 at the plate. The sophomore led off both the fourth and sixth inning with singles but the Yellow Jackets’ fielding kept the Hokies from scoring.

Virginia Tech had runners in scoring position throughout the game but Georgia Tech’s Emily Anderson tossed eight strikeouts through seven innings.

Aiken threw 6.0 scoreless innings with five hits before Tyler came into pitch in the seventh. The Yellow Jackets’ Maddie Lionberger hit a walk-off homerun to end the game in the seventh inning, 1-0. The game-winning run in the seventh was the lone Georgia Tech run throughout the weekend series.

Duff’s 3-for-4 first game and single in the second marked her ninth and 10th consecutive game with at least one hit.

The Hokies return too Blacksburg hosting a series of four doubleheaders, beginning on Wednesday. Virginia Tech will face Liberty at 5 p.m. with the second game to follow approximately 30 minutes later.
