BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech softball team prevailed through a waterlogged Saturday to close out game two and secure a run-rule victory over Boston College on Sunday, clinching their second ACC sweep in as many weekends. The Hokies improve to 12-14 overall, 7-2 in conference play while the Eagles fall to 17-12 overall, 3-3 ACC.
The Hokies and Eagles took the field on Saturday afternoon before rain halted play until Sunday morning. However, both the Hokies and Eagles put three runs on the board with RBI by both Katey Smith and Lauren Duff.
When game two of the series resumed Sunday morning, Boston College tacked on three more runs to take a 6-3 lead, led by a Tatiana Cortez homerun.
The Hokies showed their resilience, retaking the lead by the end of the fifth, 8-6. Vanessa Gonzalez and Emma Strouth led off the inning with back-to-back singles before Breanna Davenport took first to load the bases. Olivia Lattin drew the RBI-walk before Katey Smith doubled to left field to tie the game up at six-all.
Another walk and a fielder’s choice loaded the bags once again in the fifth. Duff followed up her teammate with another 2-RBI double to take the 8-6 lead.
Boston College fought to the end, adding a final run in the top of the seventh, but Tech prevailed to secure the 8-7 decision.
Maggie Tyler tossed her 10th complete game of the season, improving her record to 9-8.
Tech’s momentum continued in the second game as the Hokies took an 8-0 lead by the end of the third inning.
In the second frame, Duff led off, rocketing the Hokies first triple of the season. Gonzalez singled to drive her home before Strouth advanced the pair. On the third pitch, Caitlyn Nolan homered to left, upping the score to 4-0.
The Hokies continued into the third inning, posting four more runs on the board. A single by Kelsey Mericka and double by Duff put Tech in scoring position before Strouth hit an RBI-single. Two more hits by Lattin and Smith with a fielder’s choice allowed three more Hokies to cross the plate before the inning ended with an 8-0 advantage.
Boston College put two runs on the board in the top of the fourth off three hits, including a double by Megan Cooley.
However, Davenport sent a 3-RBI dinger beyond the centerfield fence, giving Tech the commanding 11-2 lead.
The Eagles put a final run up in the fifth but the Hokies came away with the 11-3 win in five innings.
Mikaela Aiken picked up her first complete game of the season with four strikeouts and four assists from the circle.
The last time the Hokies swept more than one ACC team in a season was in 2014 when Tech went 3-0 over Boston College, Georgia Tech, Pittsburgh, and Virginia.
Smith and Strouth led the Hokies collecting five and six hits with .625 and .600 averages, respectively. However, Nolan posted five RBI with a .571 average over the three-game series while Duff posted the same average with three RBI and Tech’s first triple of 2016.
The Hokies return to action next weekend in Atlanta. Tech will face Georgia Tech on Friday at 6 p.m. followed by a noon doubleheader on Saturday. Fans can watch each game of the series on ESPN3.
