BLACKSBURG - Maggie Tyler led the Hokies to their 4-0 victory over the Eagles on Friday night, tossing her first career no-hitter, one walk away from a perfect game. Virginia Tech improves to 10-14, 5-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference while handing Boston College its first loss in conference play to dip to 3-1, 17-10 overall.

After three scoreless innings, Kelsey Mericka put the Hokies on the board, slugging her fourth homerun of the season. Mericka’s homer flew beyond the centerfield fence, bringing home Chelsea Whitcomb to give Tech the 2-0 lead in the fourth. Pinch runner Caroline Schoenewald capitalized on a Boston College error to lengthen the margin to 3-0.

The Hokies momentum continued in the fifth inning as Olivia Lattin drew the leadoff walk. Caitlyn Nolan sent a double to the centerfield warning track, driving Lattin home to finalize the score at 4-0.

In addition to Tyler’s pitching, perfect fielding by the Hokies kept the Eagles off the bags. Both Lattin and Nolan had two putouts each as middle infielders. Mericka collected four assists to tie her season high.

Tyler’s no-hitter marks her fifth complete game of the season, evening her record to 8-8.

Tech notched seven hits in the shutout, led by Emma Strouth who went 2-for-3 while Lauren Duff and Nolan extend hitting streaks to five and four games, respectively.

The Hokies and Eagles will continue the series with a doubleheader on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Tech Softball Park.
