MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. - Early home runs by the Virginia Tech softball team were not enough to top College of Charleston in the doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at the Patriots Point Athletic Complex. The Hokies sit at 6-14 with the Cougars at 12-8 overall.

The Hokies opened up each game with a solo home run to take an early 1-0 lead. However the Cougars’ late hits gave them the wins, 4-2 and 4-1 in the first and second games, respectively.

After two groundouts in the second inning of game one, Caitlyn Nolan stepped up to the plate, sending a bomb beyond the left field fence with her first collegiate home run.

The Hokies held the Cougars scoreless through four innings of play before three consecutive hits brought two runners home in both the fifth and sixth innings.

Tech showed its fight in the final inning, loading the bases with a walk and back-to-back hits by Lauren Duff and Emma Strouth. Kiara Ota flew out to left field as Nolan crossed the plate for the Hokies’ final run of game one, finalizing the score at 4-2.

Mikaela Aiken took the loss in 4.1 innings in the circle before Maggie Tyler closed out the game.

Tyler retook the circle to begin the second game, tossing her sixth complete game of the season.

Olivia Lattin opened up the game with a solo homerun on Cougars’ pitcher Samantha Martin’s third pitch. But the Hokies were held scoreless through the remaining six innings of play.

Lattin singled down the left line in the third inning in an attempt to lengthen the 1-0 lead. However, Tech could not convert throughout the remainder of the game.

The Cougars tied up the game in the fourth inning with an RBI double to left field that was mirrored in the sixth before two Hokies errors to finalize the score at 4-1.

The Hokies return to Blacksburg this weekend to host Pittsburgh for a Saturday doubleheader beginning at noon and a single game Sunday at 1 p.m.
