BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech softball team begins Atlantic Coast Conference play this weekend as the team travels to NC State for a Saturday double header single game Sunday at noon. Fans can watch Saturday's doubleheader between the Hokies (5-10) and the Wolfpack (7-8) on ESPN3.
The Hokies return to action this weekend after holding their 20th home opener on Wednesday against Radford. Olivia Lattin scored both of Tech’s two runs in the 2-1 win over Radford with Maggie Tyler throwing 10 strikeouts in the complete game.
Led by Spartan Classic All-Tournament team members Lattin and Tyler, the Tech softball team went 3-2 in South Carolina with two shutout victories during the final weekend of February. The Hokies clinched an 8-0 rout of Morehead State off of Lattin’s 3-RBI homer and a complete-game one-hitter by Chelsea Whitcomb on Friday. Tyler threw Tech’s second shutout of the weekend, tossing 15 strikeouts - a total that leads the ACC this season.
Due to injury... Six of Virginia Tech’s seven freshmen were in the starting lineup versus Ohio and Radford. Lattin led off in second with Caitlyn Nolan at shortstop, Lauren Duff catching, Emma Strouth and Kinsey Johnson in the outfield, and Chelsea Whitcomb pitching/at third for the Hokies.
Hokies Homers: Through this season, six Hokies have accounted for 10 homeruns. Vanessa Gonzalez leads the group with three thus far while Breanna Davenport has two. Olivia Lattin slugged her second career homerun and first of 2016 at TSP versus Radford.
ACC Leaders: Tech showed promise despite the early losses, with three Hokies on the ACC’s single-game highs list. Tyler’s 15 strikeouts at USC-Upstate put her in the top spot among ACC pitcher. Freshman Nolan places on two single game lists: walks (3) and assists (8) both against No. 2 Michigan on Feb. 20. Fellow new comer Casey Gerhard ties the top spot with 15 putouts at USC-Upstate.
NCAA Leaders: Tyler’s single game high of 15 strikeouts at USC-Upstate ranks her second in the nation with eight other elite pitchers this season. Gerhard shares the top spot in the country with a single game high of 15 putouts.
Versus the Wolfpack: Tech trails the series against NC State, 14-18. However, Tech is 10-4 when playing at NC State. The Hokies’ most recent win over the Wolfpack was March 22, 2014 with a 10-4 decision in game two of the double header. The Wolfpack swept the 2015 series in Blacksburg.
Up Next: Tech travels back to South Carolina, facing College of Charleston for a Wednesday double header. The Hokies will visit Fort Sumter following practice during Virginia Tech’s spring break.
