SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Senior Maggie Tyler threw a six-run shutout against host USC-Upstate before Tech fell in a 6-5 heartbreaker to Ohio State on the second day of the Spartan Classic. The Hokies sit at 3-10 overall while the Spartans dip to 10-2 and the Buckeyes improve to 9-3.

Tyler led off the day for the Hokies, tossing 15 strikeouts in the six-run shutout with a mere three hits over the Spartans. She followed up the standout performance with four additional strikeouts in 2.2 scoreless innings against the Buckeyes.

Tech jumped on the board early against USC-Upstate as Breanna Davenport launched a homerun over the centerfield fence. The Hokies held onto the one-run lead through the third inning before back-to-back singles put Tech in scoring position. Vanessa Gonzalez brought home the second runner before the inning ended.

Bats came alive in the fifth as Emma Strouth, Davenport and Olivia Lattin led off the inning with three consecutive hits, turning in to a five-run advantage.

Lattin’s RBI-double to left field in the sixth assured the Hokies’ 6-0 decision over the Spartans. Lattin hit 2-for-3 with three RBI to lead Tech’s offense with both Davenport and Caitlyn Nolan collecting two hits apiece.

Tyler closed out the game with three strikeouts in the seventh to secure the shutout.

The Hokies faced a quick turnaround, taking on Ohio State for the second time this weekend.

The Buckeyes took an early four-run lead by the second inning. However, the Hokies showed their resilience, responding two runs in the bottom of the inning to narrow the deficit to two. Elizabeth Birle and Davenport brought home the pair of runners as Ohio State made a pitching change.

Tech tied up the game at four-runs each in the third inning as both Birle and Davenport collected their second RBI of the day. Ohio State responded with two runs in the fifth to finalize the six for the Buckeyes.

The Hokies answered back with hits in the fifth by Lauren Duff and Kinsey Johnson while Emma Strouth crossed home on a wild pitch. Despite having runners on base take the lead, Tech came up short. The Hokies left 11 on base throughout the game while the Buckeyes left six.

Chelsea Whitcomb took the loss, throwing 4.1 innings. Tyler tossed the final 2.2 to close out the game.

The Hokies conclude the Spartan Classic, taking on Ohio on Sunday morning at 11 a.m.
