TAMPA, Fla. - Despite loading the bases in the third inning, the Virginia Tech softball team was held scoreless by South Carolina on Saturday morning at the USF-Wilson DeMarini Tournament. The Hokies even up to a 1-1 record while the Gamecocks improve to 2-1 with the 6-0 decision.

Freshman Lauren Duff led off the third inning with a single to right field. Emma Strouth and Katey Smith loaded the bases with two outs on the board but Tech could not convert, leaving three runners on base.

Pitcher Maggie Tyler tossed a complete game with 10 strikeouts, despite giving up four earned runs. The 7.0-inning appearance marked Tyler’s 33rd career complete game. Three Tech errors prevented two earned runs for South Carolina.

Duff went 2-for-3 on the day to record her first collegiate hit while collecting 10 putouts as the Hokies’ catcher. Chelsea Whitcomb and Kelsey Mericka added a hit apiece to keep Tech in the game.

Tech fell behind early, giving up two runs in both the first and third innings. The Hokies showed their fight in the second inning when Whitcomb singled in the gap then stole second but could not make it home.

Led by Mericka, the Hokies showed their fight late in the game when she sent a line drive up the middle for a single. However, South Carolina’s fielding kept Tech scoreless.

The Gamecocks converted nine hits into six runs for South Carolina. Both Kennedy Clark and Kaylea Snaer hit 2-for-3, each earning an RBI in the first inning. Snaer later doubled to total three RBI in the game.

Tech takes the field again against Illinois State at the USF Softball Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 2:15 p.m.
