BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech softball team rolled past New River Valley rival Radford Wednesday at Tech Softball Park on Military Appreciation Night, downing the Highlanders, 8-0 in five innings.

Tech got on the board first, scoring a run in the second inning on an RBI ground out from Lauren Gaskill that drove in Logan Spaw. In the third inning, after singles from Michelle Prong and Vanessa Gonzalez, Jessie Mehr drove them both in with a double to the gap.

The Hokies tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth when Michelle Prong hit her ninth home run of the season, a solo shot to left field that just cleared the wall. Jessie Mehr made it 5-0 with a solo home run to right-center field, her fourth of the year. Later in the inning, Gaskill’s double down the plated Corps of Cadets member Ashley Kowalski and then Kylie McGoldrick’s double ended the game as it drove in Caroline Schoenewald and Gaskill.

Tech had nine hits in the game, led by Mehr (3 RBIs) and Prong who both had two. Gaskill (2 RBIs), McGoldrick (2 RBIs, 2 BBs), Gonzalez, and Schoenewald each had one.

Mikaela Aiken (W, 7-3) pitched all five innings, allowing just two hits with three walks and six strikeouts.

The game was the 47th in the series with the Hokies holding a 37-10 lead, winning 11 of the past 12 games.

Tech (33-13) will return to action this weekend for a big ACC home series against NC State (28-19, 10-8 ACC). The two team will play three games in three days, starting with a noon game on Saturday. On Sunday, the Hokies and Wolfpack will square off at 3:30 p.m. and on Monday, they’ll play at 7 p.m. The final two games of the series will be broadcast live on ESPNU.
