HIGHLIGHTS
• Michelle Prong hit her second home run of the season in the first game
• Lauren Gaskill set a new school record for career runs scored
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Virginia Tech softball team opened ACC play with a sweep at the hands of the University of North Carolina Monday at Anderson Stadium, falling 6-1 in the opener before dropping a 9-5 contest in the second game.
In the first game, the Tar Heels took the lead on an RBI double in the fourth inning, but Tech’s Michelle Prong hit a solo home run to left field in the fifth inning to tie it up. UNC came back strong in the bottom half of the inning, hitting a solo home run to re-take the lead and then putting together a string of base hits to make it 6-1.
The Hokies picked up five hits in the game, two from Prong and one apiece from Breanna Davenport, Kylie McGoldrick and Kelsey Mericka. Maggie Tyler (L, 6-2) took the loss, going 4.1 innings and allowing five runs on eight hits with three walks and seven strikeouts. Kelly Heinz went the final 1.2 innings, allowing a run on four hits.
In the second game, UNC scored a run in the first inning on a wild pitch, but the Hokies came back strong in the second inning. Kelsey Mericka walked to lead off the inning and then moved up to third base on hits from Logan Spaw and Jessie Mehr. Vanessa Gonzalez drove in Mericka with a ground out and then Lauren Gaskill drove in pinch runner Ashley Kowalski and Mehr with a double to left field. Kylie McGoldrick drove in both Gaskill and Breanna Davenport to make it 5-1.
The Tar Heels countered with a five-spot of their own in the third inning, capped by a three-run home run from Kendra Lynch, to take the lead back. UNC tacked on three more runs in the fifth inning on two home runs and an RBI single.
Heinz went two-plus innings, allowing three runs on three hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Tyler (L, 6-3) suffered her second loss of the day, this time in relief. She allowed four runs on four hits in two-plus innings with a walk and a strikeout. Mikaela Aiken pitched the final two innings, allowing a run on two hits with a walk and two strikeouts.
At the plate, Tech had seven hits, one apiece from Davenport, Gaskill, McGoldrick, Mehr, Prong and Katey Smith. Gaskill’s run scored gave her 152 for her career, setting a new Tech record for career runs scored as she moved past Bronwyn Blair.
Tech (13-3, 0-2 ACC) will return to action this weekend, hosting Syracuse (7-8, 0-0 ACC) in a three-game conference set at Tech Softball Park. The two teams will play the doubleheader on Saturday at noon and the single game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
