HIGHLIGHTS
• Freshman pitcher Mikaela Aiken tossed a one-hit shutout and had a three-RBI double

CONWAY, S.C. - Freshman Mikaela Aiken tossed a one-hit shutout and drove in three runs with a bases-clearing double in the fifth inning as the Virginia Tech softball team downed Lafayette 8-0 Sunday morning at the Kickin’ Chicken Classic.

The Hokies got a run in the first inning on a bases-loaded walk from Vanessa Gonzalez, but the bats were stymied after that until the fifth inning. With two outs, Aiken dropped a double into the gap to score Gonzalez, Kelsey Mericka and pinch runner Ashley Kowalski to give Tech some breathing room. In the seventh inning, Elizabeth Birle cranked a solo home run and then freshman Breanna Davenport launched a three-run shot to account for the final score.

Aiken (W, 1-0) was impressive in her first collegiate start, facing just one over the minimum. A single up the middle in the second inning was the only hit she allowed as she struck out three and walked none.

The Hokies had nine hits, but left 10 on base. Katey Smith and Michelle Prong each had two hits to lead the way while Davenport, Jessie Mehr, Kylie McGoldrick, Birle and Aiken each had one.

Tech (5-0) will take to the diamond again next weekend in Jacksonville, Florida, taking part in a tournament hosted by the University of North Florida. The Hokies will open play on Friday at Jacksonville State at 10 a.m., and then will take on a tough James Madison squad at 2:30 p.m.
