Caligiuri promoted to Senior Director of Visual and Broadcast Communications
Virginia Tech graduate takes over reigns of athletics' video department

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech Director of Athletics Whit Babcock announced the promotion of Megan Caligiuri, a six-year, full-time employee in the athletics’ video department, to Senior Director of Visual and Broadcast Communications.

Caligiuri will now lead the athletics’ video department, an office she has worked in since her freshman year at Tech back in 2005. After she graduated from Tech in 2008 with a degree in print and electronic journalism, she earned a master’s degree in education in 2009, was hired by Tech as a graphic artist and video producer for the video department, and has been here ever since.

“We are excited to have Megan serve as our new Senior Director of Visual and Broadcast Communications,” Executive Associate Athletics Director Desiree Reed-Francois said. “Megan is well-respected by her colleagues and brings a tireless work ethic and passionate creativity that will serve the position well.

Jed Castro, Brian Walls, Scott Bradshaw, Christopher Bullard and Megan, as a team, have done a wonderful job in taking HokieVision to a new level of productivity, and we look forward to continued success from this unit.”

As a student, Caligiuri shot and edited coaches video, produced highlight videos and feature pieces, and was technical director for video board productions on football and basketball game days. She also interned in the promotions department at Virgin Records in New York City and served as a campus marketing representative for Platform-1 Entertainment

As a full-time employee, Caligiuri’s position evolved, as it embraced her creative abilities through production and design for HokieVision. Her favorite yearly project is directing, shooting, and editing the “Enter Sandman” video for the football team’s entrance. She also oversaw the video needs of women’s soccer, lacrosse, cross country, track and field, women’s tennis and strength and conditioning

“Whit has demonstrated a commitment to enhance the experiences and engagement of fans as well as emphasized the continued innovation, timeliness, and exclusivity of content on Hokiesports.com,” Caligiuri said. “I am grateful for the opportunity to lead an incredibly talented and creative group of individuals and to contribute to bringing the vision and initiatives of Whit and Virginia Tech Athletics to fruition.”

Since the start of the 2014-15 academic year, there has been a 206 percent increase in video production from the department, with a new, heightened focus on informative content, fan engagement and highlight packages.

Some of the newest video content includes “Tip of the Week” from the offices of sports nutrition, strength and conditioning and sports psychology, “Sounds of Gameday,” a video highlight package that includes miced-up football players during games, and a weekly recap feature called “The Rundown,” which highlights Tech’s Olympic Sports.

The football gameday experience has also been revamped for the 2014 season, which has seen the launching of new videos like “Name that Tune,” “Tunnel Walk,” “Shout,” “Who Tweeted It?,” “I'm a Hokie” and “This is Virginia Tech Football.” These videos will continue for the basketball seasons. The added content engages fans as well as provides them with an off the field/court view of student-athletes and their personalities.
