COLUMBUS, Ohio - The 33rd-ranked Virginia Tech gave fifth-ranked Ohio State all it could handle, but the Buckeyes held on to win it 4-2 in the second round of the 2016 NCAA Men’s Tennis Championships on Sunday afternoon in Columbus, Ohio.
After giving up the doubles point and the first singles match, the Hokies (18-9) responded to tie it up at 2-2. Tech’s 77th-ranked Edoardo Tessaro got Tech on the board with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Raif Steinbach on court five.
The Hokies’ 72nd-ranked Andreas Bjerrehus tallied the match tying point on court two, knocking off 88th-ranked Chris Diaz, 6-2, 7-5.
Ohio State took a 3-2 advantage with Martin Joyce defeating Tech’s Jai Corbett at the six, 6-4, 7-6(2). The Buckeyes clinched the win on court three where Tech’s No. 107 Amerigo Contini took 45th-ranked Hugo Di Feo to three sets. Contini won the opening set 7-5, but Di Feo rallied to take the next two sets 6-1, 6-2.
The match between the Hokies’ 14th-ranked Joao Monteiro and top-ranked Mikael Torpegaard went unfinished, but was a battle between two top-15 opponents. Torpegaard held on to win the first set in a tiebreak, 7-6(7), but Monteiro responded to win the second 6-4. The third set had not begun before the team decision was reached.
Bjerrehus and Monteiro will be back on the court Wednesday, May 25 at the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
