No. 36 Hokies open ACC Championship against Miami
Tech enters tournament seeded sixth, will play 'Canes at 4 p.m. Thursday

BLACKBURG, Va. – The 36th-ranked and 6th-seeded Virginia Tech men’s tennis team is set to open the 2016 ACC Championship on Thursday, April 21 in a 4 p.m. match against 11th-seed Miami at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, North Carolina.

Miami is a familiar foe to the Hokies who defeated the Hurricanes 6-1 in the final match of the regular season last weekend. The ‘Canes played UVA later in the weekend and are coming off a 7-0 loss to the Cavaliers.

Tech (15-7, 7-5 ACC) is led by Joao Monteiro who enters the match ranked 22nd in this week’s ITA standings. Monteiro has tallied a 13-6 record this spring playing in the No. 1 spot. Andreas Bjerrehus is 66th with a 14-4 mark in duals, including 10-4 at the two. Edoardo Tessaro is ranked 74th and has an 11-6 tally. Amerigo Contini rounds out the Hokies in the ITA standings at 108th with a 13-5 record including 8-4 at the three.

Bjerrehus and Monteiro are also ranked in the doubles standings at 15th. The duo is 10-3 on the season playing in the top of the line-up.

Miami (8-14, 3-9 ACC) is led by Piotr Lomack with a 14-8 record at the No. 1 in duals this spring and enters the weekend ranked 38th. Christian Langmo is also in the ITA standings for the ‘Canes at 86th with a 7-1 tally at the two. Jesses Flores is 10-9 while Max Andrews is 10-12.

Nile Clark and Lomacki enter the rankings in doubles this week after knocking off UVA’s 10th-ranked pair over the weekend. The Miami duo is 66th in the standings. Andrews has paired up with Bernard Tefel for a 6-5 record in doubles and the pair is 72nd in the ITA.

The winner will advance to face 3-seed Florida State on Friday, April 22 at 4 p.m.
